The importance of sensory play

At Riverside, we recognise the crucial role sensory play plays in a child’s development, particularly in fostering emotional regulation and expanding their window of tolerance. Sensory play involves activities that engage the senses and provides a myriad of benefits for our youngest minds.

Why Sensory Play Matters

1. Brain Development:

The early years are a critical period for brain development, and sensory experiences play a huge role in wiring the neural pathways responsible for emotional regulation.

2. Fine and Gross Motor Skills:

Engaging in sensory play helps tamariki refine both fine and gross motor skills, promoting coordination and balance.

3. Expression of Emotions:

Tamariki often find it challenging to express their emotions verbally. Sensory play provides a non-verbal avenue for them to communicate and process feelings.

Expanding the Window of Tolerance

One of the key reasons we prioritize sensory play is its connection to emotional regulation and the concept of the “window of tolerance.” Children, like adults, experience a range of emotions throughout the day. The window of tolerance represents the optimal state of emotions where a child can effectively manage their feelings and engage with the world around them.

Sensory play acts as a therapeutic tool, helping children expand their window of tolerance. By exploring different textures, smells, and sensations, they learn to understand and regulate their emotions. This self-regulation is a valuable life skill that sets the foundation for future well-being.

As adults, we can relate to the concept of emotional regulation. Have you ever noticed how you turn to soothing activities like a warm bath, a comforting meal, or a favourite hobby during stressful times? Your child, too, seeks comfort and understanding through sensory experiences. It’s a universal need to connect with our senses for relaxation and emotional well-being.

Understanding your child’s journey

Understanding your child’s journey into the sensory world can foster a deeper connection between you and your little one. By appreciating the importance of sensory play, you become an active participant in their developmental adventure. Empathy blooms when we step into our tamariki’s shoes, or in this case, squishy socks or paint-covered sneakers!

How to Support your Child:

1. Observe and Listen

Pay attention to your child’s cues. If they seem overwhelmed, consider introducing sensory play activities

2. Join the Play:

Participate in sensory activities with your child. This not only strengthens your bond but also allows you to model healthy emotional regulation. Tamariki learn a huge amount about how to process and respond to their feelings by watching us do the same! If we take a breath and redirect our frustrations to a more constructive outlet, we’re showing them how to do the same.

3. Create a Sensory-Affirming Environment:

Provide various sensory materials at home, such as playdough, textured fabrics, or sand play areas, to encourage exploration.

By incorporating sensory play into your child’s routine, you actively contribute to their emotional well-being, helping them navigate the ups and downs of early childhood.
