As you may have noticed, we’ve recently been placing a big focus on social-emotional learning. We are committed to deeply nurturing each tamaiti as a whole person and this focus reflects our belief in each child’s innate strengths, potential and capacity for growth. By building these skills, we honour the child’s unique journey, helping them to flourish in a supportive, loving environment.
Here’s why this is important!
We view each child as capable, competent and full of potential. Social-emotional learning allows us to build on these natural strengths, guiding tamariki to develop self-awareness, empathy and the ability to connect deeply with others. This process helps tamariki understand their own emotions and those of others which in turn empowers them to approach relationships with kindness, empathy and respect – skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
All tamariki have immense capacity for emotional growth. Through SEL, we support tamariki in recognising and understanding their emotions in a positive, constructive way. Through providing tools and strategies for self-regulation, we help them navigate their emotional world with confidence and resilience. This approach reinforces their natural ability to manage challenges, cope with stress and express themselves in healthy, effective ways.
We know that every child has an inherent ability to connect with others. Social-emotional learning builds this natural inclination by encouraging open communication, active listening and the ability to understand different perspectives. By providing a space where children feel heard and valued, we build on their sense of self-worth and encourage them to express themselves authentically, strengthening their connections with peers, kaiako and whanau.
Tamariki are naturally curious, creative and capable problem solvers. Through SEL, we help them tap into these strengths to navigate challenges with a growth mindset. We create opportunities for tamariki to explore, experiment and learn from mistakes in a safe, supportive environment. This builds resilience and confidence, encouraging them to face new situations with optimism and perseverance.
